A Guide to Choosing Porch Lights

The first question to ask is 'what do you actually need your porch light to do'. If you're looking for a dimmable, decorative option to hang above a covered entrance, then our Hollis hanging pendant lantern is a strong starting point. Built from die-cast aluminium with a textured black finish and an adjustable drop of 590–980mm, it brings a timeless lantern look to any sheltered porch or entrance canopy and is fully compatible with LED bulbs. Those who prefer a wall-mounted porch lantern will find the Hollis Wall Lantern Lamp a natural companion piece, sharing the same classic black aesthetic in a downward-facing wall format, which is ideal for doorways and pathways. For something a little more contemporary, our Beacon up down exterior light in polished stainless steel casts light in both directions and includes a built-in PIR sensor, making it a discreet, highly practical porch outdoor light fixture for modern or minimal homes.

PIR is well worth prioritising if security matters as much as style. Our Ashfield PIR outside lamp delivers the warmth of a traditional fisherman lantern with automatic activation on movement - saving power and making your evening illumination completely effortless. Every outdoor porch light in this collection is IP44 rated at a minimum, making them suited to sheltered positions such as porches, covered entrances, and entrance canopies. Here at Hakolino, our team brings decades of lighting experience to every piece we offer, and personal customer support is always on hand if you’d like help choosing. Orders over £100 come with free shipping, and our 28-day returns policy means you can shop with complete confidence.

Porch Lights FAQs

How to fit an outdoor porch light?

+

For all outdoor light fittings, we’d always highly recommend getting a qualified electrician to install them. If you are qualified, you'll know that most wall-mounted fittings attach directly to a standard UK back box already fixed to your exterior wall. You can secure the mounting plate, thread the cables through, connect to the appropriate terminals, and fix the fitting in place. For a ceiling-hung option like our Hollis ceiling porch light, you’ll need a suitable outdoor ceiling rose or mounting bracket.

How to wire an outside porch light?

+

Replacing an existing exterior fitting like for like is often a manageable job: switch off the circuit at the consumer unit, remove the old fitting, and reconnect the live, neutral, and earth to the matching terminals in your new light. Nonetheless, any new outdoor porch light circuit, or cable rerouting, is Part P notifiable work in England and Wales and should be carried out by a qualified electrician.

What IP rating should my porch lights be?

+

For covered porches and sheltered doorways, IP44 is the standard you need. It protects against splashing water from any direction, making it well suited to typical UK porch conditions. Every porch light in this collection carries an IP44 rating, so they’re all ready for sheltered outdoor use straight away. You’d only need IP65 or above for fully exposed positions with direct rainfall, such as a gable end or open garden wall.

What lighting colour temperature is best for porch lights?

+

For a warm, welcoming entrance, 2700K–3000K (warm white) is the most popular choice and suits the traditional lantern designs in this range beautifully. For a crisper, more contemporary feel, 4000K (cool white) can work well with modern porch outside lights like the Beacon up down exterior light. Bulbs aren’t included with the majoirty of fittings in this collection, so always check the individual product spec for the compatible bulb type before ordering.

How do I use a motion sensor for my porch light?

+

A PIR sensor detects body heat and switches the light on automatically when someone approaches. Our Ashfield PIR outside lamp works this way straight out of the box, with no manual switching required. Most PIR porch lights include adjustable sensitivity and dwell time settings, so you can control how far away movement is detected and how long the light stays on once triggered.
