Outdoor Lighting

For any hardwired fitting, always use a qualified electrician and a suitably rated outdoor cable run through weatherproof conduit, since UK regulations require outdoor circuits to be RCD protected. If you would rather avoid wiring altogether, our solar lighting collection gives you the same outdoor lights without any cabling.

Outdoor wall lights and bollards are best fixed to solid masonry with weatherproof screws and sealant around every entry point to keep water out. For hanging fixtures such as porch lanterns, ensure the fitting has a minimum rating of IP44 for appropriate outdoor protection and aim to keep the bottom of the fixture at least 7-8 feet above the floor.

For most outdoor lights, an IP44 rating is the minimum, though anywhere exposed to direct rain or hosing down, such as garden lights near a patio, should be IP65 or higher. Always check the rating on the product page before you buy.

In most cases, yes. Although an outdoor light is often built with weatherproof housing and seals that are not always needed indoors, they can still be used inside to suit particular styles and layouts.
