Bathroom lighting and bathroom fittings need a suitable IP rating to handle steam and splashes safely, so check the rating on each product page before you buy. If you are unsure which pieces suit a bathroom, our personal customer support team is happy to advise.

As a general rule, pendants should hang around 700mm above a dining table and at least 2 metres from the floor in walkways. Ceiling lamps for hall entrances and landings often sit higher again, so there is clear headroom as you pass beneath.

Stairs benefit from a mix of wall-mounted fittings for even, glare-free light on each step, plus a ceiling fixture at the top and bottom of the flight for safety. Wall lights are usually the better choice for stairwells over table or floor lamps, since they keep the walkway clear.

In most cases, yes, the bulb itself is often the same. It is the fitting that makes the real difference. Provided the fixture casing carries a minimum IP44 rating for outdoor use, a traditional indoor bulb can usually sit safely inside it, since the casing is what keeps rain and damp away from the bulb.
