A Guide to Choosing Floor Lamps

A big part of choosing the right floor lamp is making sure it complements your existing interior style and layout. For most spaces, our Ambrose aged brass floor lamp is a strong option. With its soft linen shade, traditional metallic finish, and compact design, it offers an understated look that works wonderfully beside a sofa or armchair in a variety of interior styles. Alternatively, for rooms with more floor space and a modern interior scheme, the Milo tripod floor lamp is a stylish, tasteful choice that takes advantage of this extra room. If you're a fan of scandinavian decor, a sculptural design like our Laurent modern floor lamp works beautifully in minimalist, neutral living rooms with its geometric multi-tiered shades.

When it comes to choosing the right finish, generally, brass and wood floor lamps bring warmth and character to your home. Options like the MADE Layla wood floor light fits the brief to a tee, pairing walnut-stained wood, antique brass, and an opal glass shade for a timeless, mid-century feel. On the other hand, finishes such as glass, nickel, and silver create a sleeker, brighter look. Something like our Marlowe glass floor lamp demonstrates this well, combining clear glass shades with authentic knurled details for an industrial "resto" look.

Whether you're browsing lounge room lamps or cosy bedroom lights for the floor, our team brings decades of lighting experience to every recommendation, and personal customer support if you're ever unsure about a light. Orders over £100 ship free, and if a lamp isn't right, our 28-day returns policy makes it easy to send back. Browse our full range of floor lamps UK-wide and find your new favourite glow today.

Floor Lamps FAQs

How tall should a floor lamp be?

+

Aim for 150-165cm for most living rooms. At that height, the light sits at shoulder level when you’re seated, giving you comfortable ambient light. The majority of the floor lamps in our collection fall comfortably within this range.

How to choose a floor lamp?

+

Think about the mood first. Fabric shades, like on our Milo tripod floor lamp, diffuse light softly for a relaxed feel. Glass shades on the other hand, direct light more crisply. Then match the finish to your scheme. Use brass and wood for warmth, matt black for a modern edge, and silver, nickel, or chrome for a brighter, polished look.

Where to place floor lamps in the living room?

+

Beside a sofa, behind an armchair, or in an underlit corner are the most effective spots. Slimmer lamps like the Ambrose work well in tighter gaps, while statement designs like the Laurent suit open corners where they’ve got more room to breathe.

How do you use a floor lamp?

+

Floor lamps work best as part of a layered lighting scheme alongside ceiling lights and table lamps. In the evenings, switching off overhead lighting and letting your floor lamp take over shifts the room from functional to atmospheric. The MADE Layla wood floor light is a particular favourite for this kind of warm evening ambience.
